THIS VIRGIN DEEP – Who Do You Love 12” (1985)

Alternative mid 80’s indie UK trio with a touch of goth and psychedelic to make things real interesting. Other than this 12”, it looks like they may have had a couple singles…not positive. There’s more songs on their MySpace page…Here’s some background info taken from their page - -

“This Virgin Deep performed extensively throughout the UK from 1985 - 1987. Their unique brand of Psychobilly rock/metal, featuring manic voodoo electric violin, afforded them much attention from the major record companies. They released an acclaimed 12" single on Purple Plum, which picked up considerable airplay in the UK, USA, Europe and Japan. “

The song “See Me Burning” is the winner here…Out of print private pressing via Purple Plum Records.

Switching to a more indie pop sound, here is the lone extended player by United Kingdom’s Swimming To France. The core group comprised of a duo, Phil Shaw and Greg Mason, with a little extra help here and there. Bright and cheerful indie pop wave is what you find here. 48 CHAIRS – 70% Paranoid LP (1983)

United Kingdom based indie band that delves and indulges the listener into their unique world of experimental positions, funky sax strikes, minimalism and new wave tempos…. and they perform this potpourri of ten tunes with a quirky flair….Male and female vocals coupled with some instrumental assaults…And dare I say the utilization of a xylophone, although in a restrained fashion in one song….A rather enjoyable spin….For the vinyl collectors, this comes with a snazzy glossy 4 page lyric sheet with pictures, etc…Out of print private pressing via Relentless Records, UK…

BARA FLOKKURINN – Self Titled EP (1981)

Bara Flokkurinn was a band out of Iceland in the early 80’s. This lively six song extended player is a desirable mix of power pop, indie rock and synth wave…Vocals are in the English language. The songs “It’s All Planned” and “Radio Prison”, which start off each respective side are very infectious power pop wave numbers …Then there is the sinister synth laden meandering “Fog” to end what is a potent musical ride from this Nordic European Island country on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Out of print private pressing via Steinar HF.

PEGASONICS – New New York LP (1980)

Here’s an exceptional, quirky, left of center, odd band who were led by the late and great Mark Freeland. Mark was a innovator in the underground music scenes during the 70’s and 80’s, especially in the Western New York music area. He was driven by a creative force for artful progressive music. Pegasonics came to being after the demise of the late 70’s band Pegasus. This one and only album is packed with creative tunes that range from power pop, new wave to art rock to instrumentals. For the vinyl collectors, it comes with an interesting six page booklet full of whacky pictures and comments…a very nice addition to an impressive overall musical package….Out of print private pressing via Trelaine Records, NY.

COMMUNICATORS – Self Titled EP (1983)

The album sleeve alone catches your eye from this independent EP out of New York City in the early 80’s. The big apple was a rich breeding ground for underground indie bands and there were a plethora of them in the 80’s… This alternative oriented fivesome swings back and forth with female and male vocals and provides a creatively slick four song new wave synth platter. I see this pop up from time to time at very modest prices, so if you are inclined - this is highly recommended for the obscure synth vinyl collection. Out of print private pressing via IPS Music.

BROUHAHA – Silent Weekend LP (1984)

Brouhaha is quite the indie obscurity find. An alternative new wave oriented band that I have no information on. After an extensive search via the web of course, I was rewarded with zilch. Maybe someone out there can fill in the gaping hole and information will materialize. Anyway, this was a pleasant surprise minutes upon flipping it up on the turntable. They play an upbeat to mid-tempo, melancholic alternative new wave vibe with engaging guitars. Sounds like a successful collegiate band in their time. Enough so to warrant an independent record deal via SWM Records.

THE IMITATORS – Self Titled EP (1984)

Back to the US, here’s a new wave keyboard driven alternative band with Christian leanings. You won’t find too much preachiness here, rather some infectious up-tempo synth oriented new wave pop rock. Check out the trance infused “Paradoxical Faith”, which has a cool instrumental synth interlude smack in the middle…A Christian version of The Fixx…if you’re interested…

CLAIR INSTANT – Sensations LP (1986)

Here we have a sought after rare minimal synth wave full length album from a French duo. Jocelya and Patrick provide ample amounts of synth induced beats and sampled sounds to fulfill the minimal palate. Half the album is done in French vocals and the other half is English. Recorded and mixed by a trio of engineers at “Thalassa” studio, France. Clair Instant had a few guest musicians assisting in vocals and bass as well. The title track, with its emphasized synth pop melodies, seems to be the standout, but this LP has other fine moments- check out the dreary tune “The Moon Falls Down Tonight”…Out of print pressing via Andre Records, France.
